Public relations can feel like an overwhelming endeavor these days. We totally get it, however, pitching and leveraging doesn’t have to be something that freaks you out. Keep reading…

Last week we divulged the Attributes for Success Stolen from Famous Jewelry Designers and this week we are going to reveal a step by step guide on how to get and leverage PR in your jewelry biz. We’ve rounded up all the best PR tips from the top jewelry industry PR mavens, so listen up!

1. Have a Story

Not only do you want to have a brand story, but you want to be able to share your story quickly – in 30 seconds or less.  Get your elevator pitch tight and right. Consider your brand point of view when talking about your why.

2. Do Your Homework

Focusing on PR outlets that are right for your brand is key! Do your homework: research the magazines, TV shows, blogs, etc. that are a good fit for your brand. Focus on a small core group of media outlets for maximum impact.

3. Build a Media List

Once you’ve done your homework, create a media list of who you are reaching out to. This list should be a “live” document that you should be adding to frequently. If you stay on top of it (don’t forget to update this list to track correspondence) media calendars and trends should be a breeze!

4. Start Local

We all dream of getting our jewelry into publications like Oprah, Instyle or Lucky magazine and on popular TV shows, but that can take a lot of time to make happen. Start local by contacting local papers, TV stations and bloggers. You HAVE to start somewhere, and getting your jewelry on a local TV news anchor is pretty darn cool!

5. Stay in Touch

PR is not a “one and done” sort of thing. If you want results, you have to be consistent and persistent. Staying in touch with editors, bloggers, stylist, etc. keeps you “top of mind.” Remember, there is a fine line between being persistent and being annoying. So long as you don’t cross it, and you’ll reap the benefits.

6. Leverage Your Press

Once you get some press, make sure you leverage it! Promote your coverage on your social media, website, newsletter, and even in your conversations.

7. Have Patience

Don’t expect overnight success. A PR program takes about 6 months to a year to see results in most cases. Don’t get discouraged. Be patient, persistent and consistent and the press will continue rolling in.

Press coverage can change the direction of your jewelry business. With a proper plan and proper leverage, you’ll be on the road to more sales and recognition.
