Crystal Clear Goals

Designers tend to think that they don’t need a detailed business plan or clear cut goals, especially if they’re just starting out. But in all our courses at Flourish & Thrive Academy, we stress the importance of goals and planning because, simply put, it provides the structure that every business needs.

Having a vague idea of where you want your business to be at the end of the year isn’t going to help you achieve any goals. Instead, map out a business plan for the year with clear monthly and weekly goals so you can push your business in the right direction every single day.

Positive Mindset

If you’ve been following F&TA and this podcast for a while, you’ll know I am adamant about keeping a positive attitude. Often times, designers and entrepreneurs can get discouraged and don’t pay enough attention to cultivating a positive and productive mindset. Being negative can often turn into a self-fulfilling prophecy, which, as some of you know, is exactly what happened with my business.

About eight or nine years into my first business, I was struggling due to my own negativity. I had a very negative mindset, I hated working within my business, and I was very reactive instead of proactive. In hindsight, there were positives to focus on, but I couldn’t see them at the time.

Take a listen to the episode (above) to hear more about my story, but I really want to stress the importance of staying positive through the good times and the bad when building a business!

Know Where Your Money’s Going

While it’s very important to have sales goals and a plan to reach them, I cannot stress enough the importance of really knowing and planning for your upcoming expenses in 2016. It’s always important to plan ahead for large upcoming expenses so you can create sales goals and make sure you have the proper cash flow accordingly.

Are you headed to a trade show this year? You’d better be budgeting it out carefully!

Know your numbers, do the math, and make sure that any large investment (like a trade show) is going to be worth it. Take a listen to the episode to hear more stories and the rest of my lessons to make 2016 the best year ever in your business!
