A brief story of what you do and why you do it:
I started designing jewelry when I wasn't able to find what I wanted in the current marketplace. Zoë and Piper's first pendants speak for themselves, literally. The buddha pendant has words of inspiration written across the front and back: “Compassion, Karma, Peace, Love, Kindness, Respect and Tranquility” – words to live by. The Herbivore pendant speaks out for Vegetarians, Vegans and Animals alike. I'm proud to donate a portion of proceeds to select animal sanctuaries and advocacy groups. Working with and caring for animals has always been an important part of my life, and this is my little way of giving back.
How did you get into jewelry design?
My family was in jewelry business and for a long time we dealt in handmade Native American jewelry. We developed close relationships with several artists and I saw behind the scenes what really went into designing and handcrafting jewelry form start to finish. This help inspire me to get into the designing side of jewelry.
What makes your collection unique?
I put a lot of focus and thought on the different gemstones I use, and how each one has their own healing properties. I love to work with positive affirmations and powerful symbols that have meaning behind them.
What are your inspirations?
I have always felt connected to the asian culture and the spiritual side of things. I an inspired by mother nature, quotes that really speak to me and to the concept of karma.
How are you making a difference in your life?
I'm doing something that I truly enjoy doing and that makes me happy. That has made me a better person in general, and my daughter gets to see me being creative and running my own business – so she has a great role model!
What's something unusual about you that makes you “you”?
I have been told that I have an unusual amount of patience and remain calm and collected in stressful situations… I think this helps me in day to day life, wether that be business or home life.
What's the biggest struggle in running your jewelry business like a business? OR What is your biggest success in running your business like a business?
I struggle with dividing the time between work and home life, that is an area that I have to make myself turn off my work brain and go into the mom and wife mode. When you are self employed your mind is constantly in motion and thinking of new ideas, things that need to be done, etc. It's hard to really call it a day at 5pm and not think about business until the next morning! If someone knows the secret, please let me know.
I have been in the jewelry business for almost 20 years, showcasing a wide array of artisan jewelry throughout the years. In 2013 I started a new line of sterling silver and gemstone jewelry that showcased my style and philosophy… Zoë and Piper was born! The name is inspired by my daughter, Piper. If only we could see the world through a child's eyes, wouldn't it be a better place?
