Meet Gem Gossip

For those of you who haven’t been obsessed with this gal’s Instagram for years (we have!), Danielle is the founder and editor-in-chief of GemGossip.com, which just celebrated its seventh anniversary. Her website chronicles her love for jewelry while traveling the world, visiting and reporting on jewelry stores and designers. You can follow her on Instagram @gemgossip, and don’t forget to check out the famous hashtag she created – #ShowMeYourRings!

#1 There’s Room For Everyone

Seven years ago, when Gem Gossip first launched, Danielle was one of the only jewelry bloggers out there. Fast-forward to today, and a quick Google search will tell you there are too many to ever count! This actually good news for everyone. While Danielle paved the way for a new niche, more and more bloggers and finding success in writing about jewelry.

So where does that leave us jewelry designers? With more jewelry bloggers than ever, now is the perfect time to ditch any fear of rejection and team up with someone whose style is truly a match… and in today’s internet-centric world, there’s a match out there for everyone.

#2 Make it Personal

Just like jewelry designers, bloggers are entrepreneurs and are truly their own bosses. Keeping this crucial point in mind when pitching bloggers can make the process seem a whole lot more natural. Instead of submitting a formal pitch with line sheets to a major magazine following an editorial calendar, bloggers will go against their plans and feature a stellar designer if they’re personally invested.

While being professional is always key, you can have a bit more fun with your pitches really play up your personal story and infectious passion. Appeal to the person behind the screen is the name of the game! As Danielle says, “I personally love working with designers one-on-one… rather than some PR company or their marketing team.” I think we can all agree!

#3 Originality is King

I finally got around to asking Ashley the question we all want to know the answer to: How does an emerging designer get noticed by someone like Gem Gossip? Not shockingly, being yourself and being original were of the utmost importance.

“I love featuring crazy and almost weird designs,” Danielle says. “[Don’t try] to create designs that look like a certain trend that’s happening right now.” Especially in the jewelry business, even your trendiest of pieces should have an aspect that is timeless and original.

Listen to Danielle expand on these tips and so much more in today’s episode above!
