Designer Spotlight: Elizabeth Walker

A brief story of what you do and why you do it:

I create and I do it because I love it .
There's nothing more gratifying to me then to use my creative ability and make something that can brighten someone else's day. I would have to say that this is my true passion in life I am inspired daily by the beauty of nature, life, and adventure. Through my inspirations I try to create collections that are wearable in every day life. I hand pick my gemstones from reputable wholesalers and really try to educate myself on the quality and origins of my material. I think it's very important to know and explain to your customers exactly what they're buying. I've created an online shop where people can go and purchase my jewelry www. It is very personal to me because I created and built the website myself. I photograph and edit all of my images, sell, market, and most important design and make all my jewelry. I am proud I am living my dream. I want as many people as possible to know what I am doing and what I am all about.

How did you get into jewelry design?

It all began when I moved out to Colorado at the age of 19 in 2001. I was looking for part-time work and some extra cash to get me through college. It just so happened that my neighbor was a jewelry designer. She was looking for someone that could help her with the opening of her jewelry store. I started out as someone who could just be a body and a sales person in her store. What happened next was that she realized my interest for the gemstones and the design and asked me if I wanted to learn the trade. I jumped on it and became her lead apprentice and store manager. I was her first employee and apprentice. She taught me everything and to this day, I appreciate all that she has shown to me. It was a crazy twist of fate that we just so happened to need each other at the same time. When I moved from Colorado in 2005 was when I began to take that leap of faith and start my own company. So here I am in 2014 still creating jewelry and loving everything about it!!

What makes your collection unique?

I think what makes my jewelry unique is that all of my pieces are one of a kind. I don't re-create any of my work so when you purchase a piece you're the only person in this huge world that has it. I love that it's not mass produced. I love that it's made in the United States. I love that there's only one person's hands that have created this piece of jewelry and that person being me. Its special to the buyer and it's special to the artist and that's what I can offer my clients.

What are your inspirations?

Nature is very influential in my creative process. Living in Florida I am really drawn to the sea and the colors from the beach but from living out west and being in love with the mountains I tend to create cohesive collections of East meets West design.
I like to say, “From the Mountains to the Sea, I find beauty in everything in between”. My jewelry is inspired by life love and our Mother Earth.

How are you making a difference in your life?

I am giving this my all, I am building a future out of what I love to do most in the world. No one said it was going to be easy building a company from the ground up-but it's worth it to me to try.

What's something unusual about you that makes you “you”?

People say I'm funny……… and I appreciate that because I don't mean to be. I am just me and can get pretty animated at times. I always hope they are laughing with me and not at me!! My husband reassures me, that it's with me!!!

What's the biggest struggle in running your jewelry business like a business? OR What is your biggest success in running your business like a business?

I want to grow, I want to become a larger company and I want to be doing this for the rest of my life. I am trying to build that foundation for myself and it's hard and sometimes, I feel like I don't know what I'm doing. But what I tell myself is- steer the course. Try and stay on task, and do it, make it happen. Some days it's easier said than done but I cannot give up. I think that all of this social media is such a gift for us artist. It gives us a chance to put ourselves out there in the world and have people see our work from all over.
