Designer Spotlight: Tricia Bertrand

A brief story of what you do and why you do it:

Jewels by Trish is a Handcrafted Jewelry, Artisan jewelry boutique specializing in gemstone, fleur de lis, crystal, pearl, flower, & children’s jewels. I have always loved working with my hands. I find it hard to sit still. Even when watching a movie or relaxing on the couch, I love to keep my hands busy creating things. Creating beautiful jewels is my passion and a way for me to unwind after a hard day. I love brightening others’ lives with beautiful jewelry handmade from the heart. I find that the beads “speak” to me and I love collecting them and discovering new creations as I twist and wrap them into a piece suitable for everyday wear or for that special evening out.

How did you get into jewelry design?

I got into jewelry design by accident actually. A friend saw a necklace I was wearing, asked how much it was & upon hearing the price promptly told me I could have made it myself. I was intrigued so bought a basic beginner's kit and the rest is history. It was love on the first try and I have been making jewelry ever since.

What makes your collection unique?

My collection is comprised of all one-of-a-kind pieces. My collections are simple, yet elegant. A piece can be whimsical or you may find a piece that can carry you from everyday wear to evening wear. Of course I look at what is trending in jewelry, but I create my pieces from the heart. Therefore, I believe my pieces are timeless and not something you will find outdated in short amount of time.

What are your inspirations?

I find inspiration absolutely everywhere! Inspiration comes from nature, in clothing design, designer magazines, a simple sunset or the gentle blowing of grasses in a field. I try to keep my mind open to all possibilities for design. The beads themselves will speak to you if you let them.

How are you making a difference in your life?

I am making a difference in my life by creating with my hands. Working with my hands creates a quiet piece within myself. It allows me to step back and remind myself that I am not alone in this world and to give back to my friends and family, I must make time for myself. Oddly enough creating handmade jewelry allows me the creative outlet to let go, regroup, and recharge. Thus making me a better mom, wife, and friend to others. It's really a win-win situation. Jewels by Trish also donates a portion of the yearly proceeds to a local soup kitchen for the homeless.

What's something unusual about you that makes you “you”?

What makes me unusual? Hmmmm…It's not just one certain thing. I am OCD, very literal, a perfectionist. But I'm also a Gemini so I can be quite laid back at times and even messy. I love, love, love to laugh and I don't care how loudly I do it. Stare all you like, I am having fun. Yet, sometimes I can be very self-conscious and introverted. I have a business degree in Accounting and love numbers, yet I also have a passion for Art and design. I cry over commercials. I definitely do not fit in any certain “box”.

What's the biggest struggle in running your jewelry business like a business? OR What is your biggest success in running your business like a business?

The biggest struggle in running my jewelry business is finding the time for good marketing. I want to market myself elegantly. I would never want to spam anyone or thrust my collections upon anyone. As a result, I am quite shy when marketing myself. It is something I am working on, learning more about, and striving to become better at doing.

meMy name is Tricia Bertrand and I am married with 2 kids. I am a jewelry designer as well as a first grade teacher. I love making jewelry, playing tennis, and enjoying time with my family.
