#33 Time Optimization Strategies for Busy Jewelry Biz Owners

Have you ever felt like you went all day feeling like you were working hard, only by the end of the day, somehow, nothing is done?

All of a sudden, you open up Facebook only to find it’s 2 hours later and you missed your design window or your time to focus on Press Pitches or Marketing.

Trust me, I know first hand how easy it is to end the day not feeling very productive or like I got the most out of my day.


Because as jewelry entrepreneurs and business owners, we have to wear so many hats and it’s easy to get off track. Plus, you might find it difficult to balance the things you LOVE doing vs. the priorities that need to get done daily to move your business forward.

The truth is that it’s easy to get side-railed when you don’t have a plan or a strategy in place every day to make sure you are focusing on the RIGHT things to move your business forward.

The solution? Love it or hate it, time management is the one skill that will always keep your head over water and grow your business.

On today’s podcast, I’ll be sharing all of my favorite Time Optimization Strategies that I’ve picked up over the years that have allowed me to build two businesses simultaneously and efficiently.

#1 Identify Your Highest Leverage

The first step in maximizing your time is to identify your most highly-leveraged activities. Take a moment to think about everything that you do during your workday: Surely, there are going to be some tasks that stick out to you as “$5.00 an hour” tasks, and some that you feel are worth $500+ an hour.

As I talk more about in the podcast (above), tasks with a lower price tag can be easily outsourced, eventually giving you more time to focus on the tasks that impact your business the most.

#2 Schedule Those Activities Into Your Calendar

Next, you’ll want to start scheduling your most important tasks into your day. This can include all your most highly leveraged activities, such as sales, marketing, collection development, PR outreach, etc.

In case you haven’t noticed, Flourish & Thrive Academy is a HUGE advocate of calendars and agendas of all forms. It’s no surprise that we recommend marking your most-used calendar, whether physical or digital, to plan out your work week. Be sure assign different activities for each day of the week, and to block time out during your day where you can have zero distractions.

#3 Increase Daily Productivity with Time Blocking

As business owners, it’s technically our job to focus on tasks that bring the most money. While we all know that’s easier said than done, I’ve found that time blocking has actually been my saving grace of time optimization tools.

“Time blocking” is my term for dedicating or ‘blocking out’ hours of my day to concentrate on specific activities that are highly leveraged and revenue generating. Whether you’re a morning person or crank into full gear by noon, I always recommend that you block out a time in your day when you know you’ll be the most productive.

    Scheduling activities and sticking to an agenda is something I really need to learn to do. I like the idea of assigning different activities for each day of the week. There are far too many things to do and I try to do a bit of everything everyday and end up getting nowhere it seems. Stay with the agenda sounds good to me and I need to start that today!

    I find getting up an hour earlier really helps me get more accomplished. If I sleep in it really throws me off and I get really disorganized. Although, it may seem counterproductive, scheduling a break or a walk also helps me refocus and provides free time to let my mind think creatively.

    This is all great advice for me! Why is it that I’ve been so good at doing this for other people’s businesses but not my own? I’m still working part time as a paralegal and that’s where all my multi-tasking comes from. My goal is to stop doing it – I know it wastes time! I downloaded the checklist and that will become my priority for the rest of today.

    Then I need to let go of some of the things I can outsource. I never felt like I could afford to but I need to find a way to do it in order to keep my sanity. Maybe it will help me not feel so overwhelmed trying to learn it all!

    Good job. Very helpful. I emailed you a few years back about two many “Umms” and “like” in your podcast….no “Umms” or “like” to be found! Very clear and professional and easy to follow and take notes. Family obligations have made it so I can not do the “Thrive” academy right now…maybe next year.

    Hi Tracy ! I am happy I spent some minutes this Friday evening to listen to this podcast. I’ve heard about this topic from you other thimes before, I’ve been implementing some of your tips for a few months, so I can say that this planning thing has changed my life. I already used to plan my work, but it wasn’t goal orientated or categorized into leveraging activities. I don’t feel overwhelmed anymore, because I only focuse on what has to be done right now, and then take the next step I decided ahead. Not thinking about all the things that should be done one day in general, but instead, planning them a long time ahead, is really, really stress reducing.
    I only struggle a little bit on being precise on my 3 weekly goals, and, very often, I really can’t have 3 priorities achieved during a day, because many of the tasks request half a day or a full one. Thanks a lot !
