Over the years, I’ve been super curious about what makes ONE designer a success while another with equal talent never goes anywhere…

One is inducted into the CFDA and another can’t get a store to return her email.

Have you wondered the same thing?

Today, we thought we’d give you a sneak peak into what it truly takes to go from jewelry business “unknown” to jewelry business superstar.

For our Design to Thrive Series, we’ve been interviewing world famous designers such as Melissa Joy Manning, Rachel Dooley (Gemma Redux), Anne Sportun and Maya Brenner to mention a few.  During the series, we realized that these successful designers had similar traits and attributes that have led them to have successful jewelry businesses.

Here are six attributes for success stolen from these famous jewelry designers that you might want to emulate…

Vision Focused

Success requires a solid vision. Of the designers we interviewed, many of them spoke about creating the vision or plan then working backwards to achieve their goals.

Start with an end goal, then create a timeline with periodic goals working your way to your dream level of success.

Consistency, clear set goals, and leadership are all ingredients to success that we’ve seen across the board. Company visionaries, also known as CEOs, are the creative force behind building businesses with longevity.

Building strong business muscles is key to being a success as a designer. This starts with treating your business like a business.

Business Muscles

Structuring your business with best practices, systems and processes allows for more creativity – and a lot less time reinventing the wheel. If you want to be a successful designer, know that your jewelry is worth the effort, and stay in business mode!

Patience

“Slow and steady wins the race” so the saying goes. We’ve heard a common theme amongst successful designers that they were patient and made choices that were right for their business even if it didn’t result in the fastest growth. They invested time in building a strategy to partner with the right types of “partners” rather than just anyone.

Most importantly, they took the time to focus on selling to their DREAM clients instead of just anyone who came around.

Always Learning

Mistakes and setbacks are always a part of growing in business. In fact, using setbacks as a learning tool have allowed these designers to continue to grow and be in the business for the long haul.

Don’t throw in the towel when failure strikes. Continually learning what you don’t know is the key to growing your business.

Belief in Yourself

Finally, the key to success on any level is to believe whatever you desire is possible. Success requires confidence and persistence. The second that is lost, your business will go down the tubes.

Strengthening these attributes in your own business is the key to YOUR success as a jewelry designer or maker.
