Episode #579: Intuitive Therapy, Ancestral Trauma, and the 5 Anxiety Languages with Annamarie Green, LCSW
What If Your Anxiety Has Been Trying to Protect You This Whole Time?
Most of us have been taught to treat anxiety like an enemy. Something to manage, suppress, or medicate away. But what if that's the wrong approach entirely?
In this episode of Creatives Rule the World, I sat down with Annamarie Green, a licensed clinical social worker, psychotherapist, and founder of The Intuitive Therapy Method. Annamarie has helped hundreds of people become symptom-free in 12 weeks or less by going deeper than traditional therapy ever could.
What she shared stopped me cold.
Why Traditional Therapy Often Falls Short
Annamarie didn't build her method because she wanted to disrupt therapy. She built it because she was watching her clients spend years in sessions with little to no movement. She experienced it herself, twice a week, every modality, and still nothing was shifting.
The problem, she says, is that therapy exists almost entirely on the cognitive level. And trauma doesn't live in your thoughts. It lives in your body, your energy, and your nervous system. Trying to think your way into a regulated nervous system is like pushing a boulder uphill.
The 5 Anxiety Languages
The concept I couldn't stop thinking about after this conversation: the 5 Anxiety Languages. Annamarie created this framework to help people understand that anxiety speaks through behavior, and that every anxious behavior is rooted in a survival strategy your younger self developed to stay safe.
Here's a quick breakdown:
- Martyr: Overcommits and never says no. Core fear: I am a bad person and I am not lovable.
- Overachiever: Always chasing the next goal. Core fear: My needs won't be met unless I perform.
- Pleaser: Mirrors others to avoid abandonment. Core fear: I will be left behind if people see the real me.
- Controller: Needs certainty to feel safe. Core fear: Instability means my survival needs won't be met.
- Numb: Disconnects to survive. Core fear: A part of me is a threat to my own survival.
Most people have two primary anxiety languages, with pieces of all five showing up at different times.
Ancestral Trauma and Why Your Nervous System Is Not Yours Alone
One of the most profound parts of our conversation was about ancestral trauma. Annamarie explained that unprocessed emotional experiences from our parents and grandparents get passed down, not just as behaviors or beliefs, but as energy that literally sits on the body.
Research on generational trauma in mice showed the same survival responses nine generations after the original trauma. Annamarie sees this play out every day in her clients. What feels like your anxiety very often has roots that go much further back than your own lifetime.
Where to Start
If you are overwhelmed and don't know where to begin, Annamarie's advice is simple: find your anxiety language. It gives you a starting point. Instead of walking into therapy and listing your current problems, you walk in with a map of your root fear and your survival patterns. That changes everything.
