Matthew received a BFA in industrial design from Pratt Institute. He began his professional career designing watches for Marc Jacobs, DKNY, and Diesel. Matthew has had two companies, Steel Cake (a watch company with materials sourced overseas) and Brooklyn Bakery (a leather goods company with materials sourced in the US).

Matt co-founded Maker’s Row with Tanya Menendez in 2012 . Maker’s Row has a network of over 4K American manufacturers and 35K brands and designers looking to create products in the USA. Maker’s Row has been featured on NPR, CNN and CNBC.

    Great interview and its so nice to ‘meet’ the CEO of MakersRow. I found out about Makers Row through Flourish and Thrive. I have not yet begun my search for manufacturers though this company but it gives me great peace of mind knowing this company is there and ‘ready for me’ when I am ready to produce, as manufacturing domestically is very important to me. Best sourcing ‘secret’ I’ve learned by trial and error is to provide my casting company with detailed drawings and diagrams so they get everything right. You guessed it: communication!     Hi Robyn,
    I can relate to this video having hired independent jewelry contractor’s.
    Communication is key and most important.
    Some tips that I can share when hiring outsourcing would be:
    Have a non-disclosure agreement in place to ensure that the person you are hiring is clear on all of your expectations.
    Do a trial run to see if the person you hire can actually do the work, begin with simple tasks and move towards more difficult tasks such as wire wrapping for example.
    Ensure that they know exactly how you want your jewelry to be made right down to every little detail, don’t assume they will know, actually show them, demonstrate a few pieces.
    Make sure they are listening, really listening as you are giving out instructions
    Make sure they let you know how they are doing each and every week
    Send them a appreciation note every once and awhile to let them know that you appreciate them for without them you may not be in business!
    Find out if they are interested in any other aspects of your business as many manifacturer’s love jewelry and would love to sell it as well.
    Ask them to grant you atleast one month’s notice if they do not wish to continue with the work, especially if you don’t make the jewelry yourself.
    Ensure that no matter how busy they are as some outsourcing manifactuer’s are usually student’s or people that are looking for additional income understand that you are running a business so they must ensure that the timeline that you have given them will be delivered.
