Episode #573: Why Going Viral at 50 Taught Me That Confidence Is a Practice, Not a Personality with Jen Polt
How Jen Polt Turned Midlife Crisis Into Midlife Renaissance
What do you do when the life you've built stops fitting who you're becoming? It's the question that haunts so many women in midlife, and it's exactly what my latest podcast guest, Jen Polt, faced when she realized her corporate success was leaving her soul empty.
After 25 years climbing the corporate ladder at companies like Chanel, Jen found herself creating content during COVID just to stay connected with other humans. What started as boredom-driven beauty tutorials turned into viral moments at age 50 that changed everything. But here's the twist – just three weeks after she quit her job to bet on herself full-time, her husband told her he didn't want to be married to her anymore.
The Vulnerability Muscle
In our conversation, Jen shared something profound: “Vulnerability is a practice, not just something you turn on when it's convenient.” She's built her entire brand on showing up authentically, sharing the messy moments alongside the victories, and it's exactly what her community craves.
The breakthrough moment came when a close friend told her, “I always felt like you had all your shit together, and you just saying that you don't makes me feel safe to say that I don't too.” That's when Jen realized she'd been giving everyone the “emotional Heisman” – keeping people at arm's length instead of letting them support her.
Confidence Is a Practice
What I love about Jen's approach to confidence coaching is how practical it is. She doesn't tell women to just “believe in themselves.” Instead, she gives them actual exercises: take yourself to dinner alone, go to a movie by yourself, plan a day trip without asking permission. Small actions that compound into bigger self-trust.
Her advice for women who feel invisible in their own lives? Go back to childhood. “What did you love before the world got in the way?” Those core passions are still there, waiting to be rediscovered.
The Permission Slip
Jen's story is ultimately about giving yourself permission to want more, even when everyone around you thinks you should be grateful for what you have. Her new program, The Confidence Clubhouse, is specifically designed for women who are done with toxic positivity and ready to do the real work.
As Jen says, “There's no expiration date on dreams.” Whether you're 35 or 55, reinvention is always possible – but only if you're willing to practice the courage to choose yourself first.
In this episode, you’ll learn:

- [12:45] Why her boss told her “you're onto something” and became her biggest cheerleader for quitting
- [18:20] The kitchen island conversation that changed everything (and why timing is everything when someone doesn't believe in your dreams)
- [25:10] The “emotional Heisman” that strong women unconsciously give people (and why it's blocking the love we actually crave)
