Episode #588: Why Your Nervous System Is Capping Your Income, with Dr. Farya Barlas
The income ceiling no funnel can fix
You have done the work. You bought the course, built the funnel, raised your prices on paper. And still, your revenue keeps landing in the same place it has landed for years. If that is you, my conversation with Dr. Farya Barlas is going to feel like someone finally handed you the missing piece.
Farya is a chartered psychologist who has spent more than two decades helping entrepreneurs, founders and leaders work with what she calls invisible barriers. These are the patterns that no amount of strategy or motivation seems to touch. She has a name for the way most high achievers operate: trauma-led success.
What trauma-led success actually means
Here is the part that reframes everything. Farya does not define trauma as one big, dramatic event. She defines it as every small moment you had to abandon or betray yourself in order to fit in, be accepted, or be loved. Over time, your nervous system files those moments away and builds a sense of how much success feels safe. So when you push past that ceiling, your system steps in and caps you, not to sabotage you, but to keep you safe. As Farya puts it, your nervous system is not there to make you money. It is there to keep you alive.
That is why, she explains, you cannot affirm your way out of a trauma response. Affirmations and mindset hacks are wonderful, but only if your system is open enough to receive them. If you are operating from survival, no script is going to override what your body believes.
Why this hits women differently
We also get into something I rarely hear named so clearly. So much of the standard success advice (wake at five, jump in the ice bath, push through) comes from a male nervous system that processes safety and pressure differently. On top of that, many women carry intergenerational patterns that link being seen and earning money with danger. You can be doing everything right and still feel your body pump the brakes.
The shift from survival to thriving
The first step is less glamorous than a new funnel. It is honestly recognizing where you are actually operating from. I got vulnerable in this one and shared how I built Flourish & Thrive out of a trauma response after my 2009 bankruptcy, and how it took me years to see that I was reliving that fear in my business almost every day. Once I named it, I could change my relationship with my own company instead of white-knuckling through it. Farya's work is about doing exactly that on purpose, keeping the resilience and the drive your hardest seasons gave you, and releasing the patterns that are no longer yours to carry.
