Episode 439: How to Use AI Without Getting Sued For Plagiarism and Copyright Infringement

how to use AI without plagiarism

Today’s episode is about how to protect yourself when using AI (and how to protect your work from others using AI)!

Nowadays there are so many lawsuits out there revolving around AI. Protecting yourself from getting sued isn’t something you want to put off learning about, trust me! None of us want to unknowingly plagiarize something, borrow someone’s copyright, or use a trademark that we’re not supposed to and as a result risk getting sued

My good friend Lisa Fraley, a legal coach, talks about how to steer clear of the plagiarism, stealing, and copyright and trademark infringement accusations that are happening around AI and tools such as ChatGPT right now.

We dive into how to ethically use these amazing tools that speed up production and content creation, as well as what steps to take to protect your work from others trying to take ownership of it!

Learn the steps you should be taking right now to stay safe and be smart when selling jewelry and other products online!

Create Content That’s Original and Yours

The most important takeaway from this episode is don’t use AI suggestions exactly as they are. Make sure that you tweak, change, and edit them to be unique to what you have to say.

Think of AI as a tool to help you with your first draft. It’s perfect for giving you inspiration, concepts, phrases, and sentences that you can take and make your own. Not only do you not want to unknowingly copy someone else’s work, but you also could have an issue claiming it as your own if it’s word-for-word from AI!

Double-Check You Have Permission

AI pulls up lots of great content in its searches, but the problem is that some of that content could be other people’s work. That’s why it’s so important to not use it exactly as it is.

Make sure that you have permission to use whatever AI spits out at you. It’s important to look for citations to see if  AI pulled content from someone else’s work in its search. However, just because citations aren’t there doesn’t mean it’s still not someone else’s. That’s why doing some of your research around this is important as well. The key is to take what you find and make it original to you!

Protect Your Own Work

Just like you don’t want to accidentally claim someone else’s work as your own, you need to be prepared in case someone claims your work as their own. Take steps to trademark and copyright your own work!

Lisa uncovers the difference between trademarking and copywriting, and why you should make it a priority to do both. The last thing you want is for someone else to use your work without your permission or claim ownership of it and you’re not prepared properly to protect it. Although it’s an investment, it’s WORTH it to have lawyers help you do it right!
